Task 6 - Laura Mulvey Representation

Laura Mulvey is a feminist who coined the term 'Male Gaze' in 1975 and they preceive characters from the perspective of man. Features of 'Male Gaze' are shots outline women sexually through body curves as theyre seen as objects.
What I understand from her interpretation is that females are seen as a sexual object towards men, and thier status is much lower than men and that theyre there to please the male eye.
Music videos are presented in such a way that both the female and male are made see women through the eyes of a heterosexual man

Really great examples of this can be seen through blurred lines, whereby the male actors and the audience see the women as objects to the men and as a sexual reference. One of the lyrics goes "let me liberate ya" and "far from plastic, must wanna get nasty" and "the way you grab me",  these are few of the lyrics that Luara herself speaks of, and that the male and audience view woman through a different lense, downgrading thier status.

Rick Ross - Diced Pineapples, potrays the value of women through the idea of money, and fame.
And is another perfect example of the representation of women in music videos. Of course this doesnt call for every music video.

Task 5 - Carol Vernallis

Carol Vernallis is a writer on music videos, and has special fields in audiovisual aesthetics, digital technologies, film music, popular culture and popular music, production practice

  • Continuity editing does not neccessarily apply to music videos.
  • Edits are very obvious to the eye
  • Jump cuts are often used.
  • Master base tracks are used in order to maintain structure.
  • Camera moves with music.

Examples:
of Slow Motion:

Although this isnt a music video, this best descibes slow motion in its best action, slowing it down though FPS. This can really attract attention and detail to the video giving it more impact and definiton to the audience.

Jump Cut:
A jump cut is a cut in film editing in which two sequential shots of the same subject are taken from camera positions that vary only slightly. This type of edit gives the effect of jumping forwards in time.

Close Ups:

Highlights emotion and refrains main character of the scene

Post 4 - Andrew Goodwin Theory

Amplification - Often

This music video illustrates the lyrics, Abel lyrics talk about drug use, sex, and deep meanings which are represented through the video for example, through prostitues and drugs in the video.

Disjuncture - Cant Feel My Face
The music video represents a Abel as a stand up singer and the lyrics do not have any connection with the music video itself. The singer is dancing, and the video is more towards pop,

Post 3 - Function Of A Music Video

The main function of a music video is to highlight the main artist of thier lyrics, style, attitude, so that the audience get a certain persective of their work. It is also used to help attract the audience rather than just listening to the track. Video is used to attract audience through latest trends and the use of Misenscene; Props, Lighting, Costume, etc. Another reason is to help brand awareness for example a label so that more people are aware of the label and the music it produces to help create a greater awareness. Moreover, music videos are used to gain profit by promoting and advertising brands, such as the Beats Pill which is promoted by French Montana. The Weeknd - The Hills is a great example of a music video which helps highlight the main artist as he expresses his lyrics and style to the audience through the way he potrays his walk and the way his lyrics potray the way his music video is represented through drug use. Moreover the audience automatically become attracted to his music video as there is explosions which go along with the beat and the climax.
